This week, the members of The FEW began to study and look closer at the Ohio Education Association. Their views align closely with our own, and they are achieving a lot of good things!

For starters, they are wanting to end a lot of cases of ‘mandatory-retention,’ in cases where students are not reading at the goal. This can be problematic, and often ableist, not considering how we can help students, but only hold them back. This will be voted on in House Bill 497.

They are also looking at ways to find new teachers and increase retention rates, one of which is a proposal to make the minimum teacher pay $50,000, increasing funding to schools in general for resources, strengthen retirement benefits and security, removing financial barriers for teaching licensures, and to create a database of completely accessible knowledge for all teachers.

They also have made suggestions for the election and committed to formal nominations! They recommended Representative Tim Ryan for U.S. Senate and Justice Jennifer Brunner, Judge Marilyn Zayas, and Judge Terri Jamison for the Ohio Supreme Court. Nan Whaley, mayor of Dayton, Ohio, also received a formal recommendation for her race in the gubernatorial election. Not formal nominations include Jeff Crossman and Scott Schertzer.
